portraits are made only through an effective understanding of the people we have to photograph. It is essential to establish a relationship with the person who is in front of us, to trust them and to make them trust us, to make them feel at ease, to create a dialogue. A posed portrait can be very beautiful in itself, but giving space to the unexpected and imperfection can make it more real and intense, enhancing the personality of the subject.

What is the photographic portrait and how do we define it? Here we explore the difficulties of this question and provide insights into how to create a portrait that is as emotional as possible. Generating natural situations, empathy, encouragement and constructive feedback creates authentic images. By playing a role swap and showing vulnerability to our subject, you will achieve extraordinary results. We will talk about some photographers who have influenced my work and how I myself turn to them when I have to approach a particularly difficult and complex project.

[ THE SETUP ]

This lesson provides a brief introduction to a variety of issues and practicalities surrounding photographic portraits.

1. Creation of the mood board and the storyboard, because ideas need to be designed and visualized before they are even put into action.
2. Lighting and equipment needed to create our photo set. As simple as possible.
3. We will define how to create an adequate wardrobe and props that are consistent with the personality of the chosen subject: a brief introduction to the concepts of art direction and styling.
4. Discuss the importance of the frame, decision making and how patience plays a role in creating strong photographs. We will have a real live shooting: you will have the possibility to direct your model with all the freedom and confidence gained from the previous discussion and planning.

[ THE OUTCOME ]

At the end of the day we will look at the result of the shots obtained during the day and we will discuss the work done together, you will receive practical advice and indications on how to build a portfolio and how to define your personal artistic line. People are one of the most dynamic subjects to photograph, they present many challenges to face while working, and the end result may surprise you first. Let's begin!
